Recentish HP fic recs?

Probably inevitably, the arrival of the last HP movie, combined with that great Time article on fanfic, seems to be kicking me back into HP fandom, at least within my own head. Problem is, though HP was my primary fandom for a long, long time, it was also a long time ago. So all the archives/authors I've followed have either shut down or moved on, or I've forgotten what/who they were. The ones I can remember are the ones that pretty well took everything, and therefore contain mostly lousy fic with the occasional gem (like ff.n or fiction alley).

I suspect most people on my friends-list would be in the same boat, but I know there's at least one or two of you still active in the HP fandom, right? So, can anyone point me to active rec lists, or active selective communities, where I can find fic written post-DH (or at least post-HBP)? It doesn't need to be *set* post-series, and it can mess around with canon (especially, for instance, if a certain Potions Master survived after all), but I'd like to have that influence of the later canon.

Good recs to any current (or recent) comms and authors would work, but if you know a lot and want to narrow it down, I tend to be most interested in Snape, Harry, and the relationship (of any sort) between the two. Other favorite characters are Neville, McGonagall, Remus, Percy, and Luna. I'm more interested in adults than teenagers, and the only way I really care about the next generation is if the stories are really about their parents (with an exception for Al Potter as a Slytherin).

Thanks for any help you can give!

Winter Break!

Today is finally our first day of Winter Break. Normally, mind you, I crawl out of bed at about 5:15 AM. Today, since the break started, I nearly leapt out of bed at 3:50 AM.

But on the plus side -- the really big plus side -- I'm in Michigan with my family for the first time since the start of August. And that makes up for quite a lot.

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone.

Writer's Block: Acquired taste

[Error: unknown template qotd]

Friendly's Reeses Peanut Butter Cup sundaes ... with mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Mmmm. So good.

If you have the misfortune of being unfamiliar with Friendly's, their PBC sundae is pretty much what it sounds like. Three scoops of ice cream (vanilla is the default) with hot fudge, their ultra-yummy peanut butter fudge sauce, whipped cream, a cherry, and a peanut butter cup.

When I was about eight, I decided that sounded perfect, so I ordered it and specified my favorite ice cream, mint chocolate chip, at which point the rest of my family looked at me in horror. I think it hadn't occurred to me to consider the combination of flavors, but I'd already ordered it, so I was determined that it was exactly what I wanted. And happily, it turned out to be absolutely brilliant. Probably every single time I've been to Friendly's since (not that often; the local ones all closed in the mid-late 90s), I've gotten the same thing. And it's still delicious.

Does anyone know how much weight you should give online apartment ratings? I've been searching through apartments in the area where I'll be teaching next fall, and I'm seeing lots of places that look nice or reasonable. And then I check the reviews (mainly at apartmentratings.com), and find that apparently every apartment in the region is pest-infested, crime-ridden, falling apart, missing most advertised amenities, and staffed by assholes.

I need to live somewhere. The "nicer" areas in the region are generally way the hell out of my price range (which isn't that low!), and I'd strongly prefer to live within a 15-minute drive, at most. I'm an utter wuss about safety, in particular. Any tips on how to look more effectively? Random comfort, perhaps? Offers of a spare room?

Commencement

I graduated yesterday. :-)

Just thought I'd mention that.

This does not make me less nervous about the whole "rest of my life" thing. Nor does the realization of just how much I have to do this summer.

Great Cinema

A friend and I watched Shark Attack 3: Megalodon last night, of course starring the always-entertaining John Barrowman. It was flipping *hilarious* - really, I can't recommend this movie strongly enough. Not that it's *good*, mind you; it was every bit as awful as I'd heard. But seriously, watch it. If only for the jet ski scene.

That was a first...

In order to finish part of an assignment for class, I just Googled the phrase, "Suri Cruise spitting image." No, really.

Then, of course, I selected the most reputable-looking source on the first page. Which turned out to be the Daily Mail.

Your result for The What type of MAN turns you on Test...

Adventure man

You scored 60% masculine, 41% athletic, 64% exotic, and 44% refined!

You like a man who doesn't need the crazy muscles to prove he is a 100% man. He is mysterious and his pictures make you want to jump into his head to see what is going on in there...or his pants I suppose. You like a little bad-ass in him and you may like someone like.....Jude Law. But let's face it, the whole point of this was to look at a bunch of hot guys. If you liked what you saw, please rate my test!

Technology fail

I love it when my DVD player decides the best possible point to freeze and refuse to play a given disk is right at one of the movie's big climactic points. That I can't find on You Tube. It's great, really.

Torchwood S1 rewatch

I'm currently rewatching S1 of Torchwood, and I know that a lot of people consider Small Worlds among the worst episodes of the series. I can understand that, and there are certainly a lot of ways that I think the episode could be improved.

But far more importantly, how much can you complain about an episode that gives you a half-naked John Barrowman splayed out on a bed, restless and panting?

Yay, birthday! :-)

Today I managed to get free - to me - lunch (beef dip and fries), ice cream (Yellow Brick Road from Ben & Jerry's), and dinner (spinach/artichoke dip, pecan-encrusted chicken, mashed potatoes, veggies, and key lime pie). Plus, I finally bought the Doctor Who Series 2 DVDs, paid for with a coupon, old gift cards, and birthday money from Mommy and Daddy. Also, I "worked" for 8.5 hours, the bulk of which was spent either not actually there or watching (other) DVDs while the computer scanned things. Yay!!!

The only downside was that I had to go to a 2nd Borders to get the DVDs, so I was running late for dinner, then I got stuck in three separate patches of construction traffic. But I got there, which is what matters.

Summer vacation! Finally!!

Having finally turned in my last paper, I have no classes or schoolwork for an entire month! Yay!! :-D

(So, of course, I plan on working full-time or more for that month. Boo!!)

Work and Laziness

I have a major paper due this Thursday, a shorter-but-still-major paper due next Saturday (turned in online), and this Thursday I'm taking a major test that will, by itself, determine whether or not I have to take psychology this fall. Plus, I have roughly a month's worth of housework to do, plus a bunch of other stuff.

And really? I just want to sit and read fanfic. Or daydream. Possibly watch TV. It's nearly 6 PM, and so far today I've done some brainstorming and little else.

This is bad.

Resource request for paper I'm writing

Quick question, possibly aimed more at the Brits on my flist.

My understanding is that the whole "evolution vs. creationism" debate, which tends to be a pretty massive issue in schools in America, is a complete non-issue in most other Western countries, yes? Moreover, I've gotten the impression that said other countries (the UK being the one I'm most aware of), tend to laugh at us because of this, or scoff at our schools, or something along those lines.

Does anyone know where I could quickly find any articles or other vaguely reliable/notable sources that would either discuss this or, just as good, demonstrate it?

Thanks!

Fresh food!

I made it to the local Farmer's Market for the first time in probably 1.5 - 2 years today. Our Farmer's Market is actually downtown (it's a parking lot the rest of the week), so it's easier to walk to than drive. It takes about a half-hour each way, most of which is fairly pretty.

Anyway, I spent $16 to buy:
1 large garlic-cheddar roll
2 ears of corn
3 zucchini
4 basil plants (in one tray; one of them is really tiny, though)
5 oz. jar of cherry jam
6 peaches
and however many blueberries are in one pint.

Which makes me happy. I don't know whether to make some zucchini-squash-basil pasta (I already have the squash) or find that savory chicken and peach recipe I saw a few days ago.

Which American accent do you have?

Northern

You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.

Yay! I've lived in metro Detroit since I was 4 months old, so I *ought* to get that. However, there were times when I was growing up that classmates would ask where I was from because they thought I had an accent.

Torchwood

Two weeks until Torchwood is shown on BBC America. I plan to wait and watch it then, rather than trying to see it on You Tube or via the uploads that I'm sure are already available (but both of which are a total pain and much lower quality than even my shoddy TV). I also hope to remain spoiler-free in the meantime. We'll see how well I can hold out, on both counts. Wish me luck!!

Absent-Minded Professor

One of my profs for the upcoming fall term is responsible for setting up our field experience placements with teachers in local schools, and she sent us an e-mail tonight to let us know where they are. Advance notice, - great, right? Um, yeah. First off, she sent the important part of the e-mail (the placement list) in a WordPerfect file -- who the hell has WordPerfect?

Second, the message actually said that we should get in touch with the teachers now to set up a time to *meet* with them *before* schools close for the summer, in order to set up our schedule for this fall. So, I have a field experience placement for a class this current term, which means I'm at a local school right now. There are less than two weeks left in the school year. The cooperating teachers do NOT have time to deal with us right now. They have *better* things to do than deal with people who are going to be imposing on them for a couple hours a week next fall. Just as importantly, we students probably fall into two main categories -- those of us taking intensive spring term classes (like me), who similarly do *not* have time to go meet with a teacher, and those students who are not taking spring classes. And in most cases are home for the summer. Or somewhere else entirely, including out of the country. But who may well not be anywhere within a few hours drive of the school that they're supposed to show up at, on someone else's schedule, sometime in the next week and a half.

Seriously, *what* is this woman thinking??

If God had meant for us to run, he'd have given us wings

I decided to join folks in starting the Couch-to-5K running plan today. It promises that Week 1 is good for lazy bums like me, then you work your way up to a 30 min (or 3 mi) jog in two months. So I went out today all full of motivation and self-efficacy and other vital stuff I learned about in ed psych ... all of which were gradually lost over the course of the workout. )
